Salem hospital is a 284-bed community teaching hospital that provides comprehensive adult and pediatric services to the North Shore community of Massachusetts. Along with Union Hospital, Salem Hospital comprises the North Shore Medical Center. The rotation at Salem Hospital is designed to provide a community hospital setting for training in gynecologic surgery during the PGY 2 year, and expose the residents to the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the community as compared with an academic setting. Approximately 2700 gyn surgical cases are performed annually at Salem Hospital. This is primarily an operative block for the residents, with residents participating in operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery and various urethropexy procedures. Additionally, during this rotation residents have a weekly one-on-one tutorial with a staff pathologist to learn basic obstetric and gynecology pathology, as well as have the opportunity to present at Salem Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds.
