Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is one of the important teaching sites of Harvard Medical School (HMS) with a 900-bed capacity, more than 45,000 annual admissions and 1.5 million ambulatory visits. Patients are cared for at the main campus in Boston and at the four neighborhood health centers located in Back Bay, Charlestown , Chelsea and Revere . Founded in 1811, MGH is the third oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest in New England . It was the original teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School .
The Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service was founded in 1891 and today is the third largest admitting service at MGH. Its world-class patient care is supported by a young research program that has rapidly become internationally known for its groundbreaking studies. The Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology (VCRB), with its 8,000 square feet of laboratory space, is devoted to basic research in the areas of infertility and gynecologic cancers and to basic, translational and clinical research in all areas of women’s health. The VCRB staff actively promotes collaboration with the Vincent clinical faculty and provides extensive opportunity for resident participation.
The Vincent Obstetrics Service is staffed by full-time faculty who perform 3500 deliveries each year, making it the largest single faculty practice in the region. It is supported by the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children with an 18-bed level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A new state-of- the-art NICU facility became operational in 2006.
A jewel in the service is the new Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care, the largest ambulatory facility in New England , which encompasses 440,000 square feet and houses much of the MGH outpatient care. The new space brings together for the first time all obstetrics and gynecology outpatient services under one roof, enhancing clinical collaboration as well as patient privacy and convenience.
MGH is located in the heart of the city of Boston and for that reason has one of the busiest emergency departments in the city. MGH and BWH are three miles apart with travel between hospitals facilitated by frequent shuttle service.
